Singing has many benefits for your mental and physical health. If you need some more reasons to sing – other than you like doing it! – I’ll give you 4!
1 – It Helps Regulate Your Nervous System
Singing happens in the larynx, which is connected to the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve that connects the brain, the guts, the lungs and the heart. When we sing we stimulate this nerve, which in turn activates the parasympathetic system, which is the one responsible for slowing our heart and breathing rates, lowering blood pressure and promoting digestion. Our body enters a state of relaxation, and this relaxation breeds recovery. The more time we spend in this state, the healthier we are.
2 – It Improves Lung Function
Because singing involves deep breathing and the controlled use of muscles in the respiratory system, it can help improve the way we breathe and our lung capacity.
3 – It makes you feel happier
It’s scientifically proven!! Scientists have been accumulating evidence that singing releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine – the chemicals that boost your mood and make you feel good about yourself.
4 – It helps improve memory
Singing can help improve mental alertness, memory and concentration. When we sing we engage many areas of the brain because it involves focusing on multiple things at once.
